"Friday" is a song by American recording artist Rebecca Black, written and produced by Clarence Jey and Patrice Wilson. Rebecca Black (born June 21, 1997) is an American pop singer who gained worldwide notoriety with her 2011 single "Friday". Her mother reportedly paid $4000 to have the single and an accompanying music video put out as a vanity release through the record label ARK Music Factory. The song was co-written and produced by Clarence Jey and Patrice Wilson of ARK Music Factory. After the video went viral on YouTube and other social media sites, "Friday" was derided by many music critics and viewers, who dubbed it "the worst song ever". The music video, uploaded to YouTube, has received more than 160 million views causing Black to gain international attention as a "viral star". The song was released as a single and made the Billboard Hot 100 and other charts.
Rebecca Black was born on June 21, 1997,in Anaheim, California. She is the daughter of John Jeffery Black and Georgina Marquez Kelly, both veterinarians, and is of Spanish, Italian, Polish, and English descent. An honor student, Black studied dance, auditioned for school shows, attended music summer camps, and began singing publicly in 2008 after joining the patriotic group Celebration USA.
The concept for the music video is based on the lyrics and presented as a typical Friday for Black. She wakes up and goes to school, meeting her friends on the way. In the evening, after debating whether to sit in the front or back of a convertible, Black and her friends (Benni Cinkle and another girl) ride the car to a party. Wilson appears near the end of the song to deliver a short rap
The video was shot in January 2011 at Black's father's house with friends and family as extras, and requiring multiple takes over 12 hours. ARK Music, according to Black's parents, cautioned them and her that they should not expect her to become famous. Black hoped that her friends and family would enjoy watching the video on YouTube and that it would perhaps help her to later begin a singing career. The video was posted on February 10, 2011 and received 4,000 views, enough to please Black, before comedian Michael J. Nelson's Twitter account and a Tosh.0 blog post, "Songwriting Isn’t for Everyone", drew attention to it on March 11, 2011, turning the video into a viral hit.
The music video for the song became a viral hit due to criticism of the song's lyrics, the excessive use of Auto-Tune on Black's vocals, and the content of the video. As of June 1, 2011, the video had more than 156 million views, and 3.04 million "dislikes" from YouTube users against just 427 thousand "likes".[update]
